The Museums and Heritage Service, has been established by DCS as a specialist division to deal with the digitisation and indexing of documents and graphics from museums, galleries, libraries and archives.
The experience that DCS heritage professionals bring to Heritage Services has been gained through working with institutions like the UK Parliamentary Archives, the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery and the Royal Society.
Projects undertaken range from document scanning and indexing of contemporary materials to the preservation of historical content in digital form.
Digitisation allows clients to deliver access to both internal audiences and the wider public including creating digital surrogates of valuable materials for academic research or public exhibitions.
Producing surrogates in itself protects originals and the security and the integrity of original materials undergoing the digitisation process is our top priority. Where it is appropriate digitisation can take place on clients’ premises for example, to allow for optimal atmospheric storage conditions and security.
Techniques DCS Museums and Heritage Service employs includes:
-
• Planetary book scanning
-
• High end, colour managed, digital photography
-
• Flat bed scanning
-
• Map and plan digitisation
-
• 35mm slide, glass plate negative and photographic print scanning
“Heritage” does not have to be old: some of DCS, conversion work involves data has been captured from old, outdated or legacy formats or where organisations need to migrate data to new systems or databases.
Making heritage available and accessible is one thing. Making it searchable is another. DCS Heritage Services deliver high quality indexed sources, with Boolean search facilities and the latest international metadata standards.
